Massage is very low risk for most people and a lot of people can benefit from it, not just back pain sufferers.  In addition to physical benefits, massage can be very relaxing too.  The reason for helping the body relax is that massage help release endorphins, which is natural chemical of the body that make you feel good and act as pain suppressors.

Back pain is usually cause by muscle strain, which happens from lifting a heavy object or a fall.  The lower part of the back can become strained or torn and last from several hours to a couple of weeks.  When the back muscles are strained or torn, they can become inflamed.

When it’s inflamed, the muscles in the back can spasm and cause severe lower back pain.  When it’s severe, you will have a difficult time moving around, especially when turning your body.  With massage therapy, it can help work out the spasm and improve range of motion.  It might require a couple session of massage therapy to help restore your back so don’t be surprise if you have to come back for a couple weeks.

Massage therapy is great for people with back pain, but there are some people that massage therapy will actually cause more problem.  For this reason, if you have back pain, you should see your doctor first to discuss if massage therapy is right for you.  But for the most part, massage therapy will help relieve you from back pain.
