Why does my cat cry when I pet him like he is in pain? It starts around the middle of his back to the tail.?

He might have a back problem, if it’s a nw and distuurbing behavior, best to have him checked out by a vet.
We found out after 10 years of having the cat that he had a cracked vertebrae this whole time. Not much they could do fotr it, we just have to be more careful, unless we want to get major surgery. Point being, an x-ray could really shed some light on t.
I don’t know for sure, but I’ve noticed weird behavior in my 2 cats when I do that too.
One of them even lifts his head up in the air at a strange angle, and starts snorting! Other times he just meows kinda weird-like. (They’re both males.)
I think that area maybe has heightened nerves or something, maybe even a sexual reaction. You know, male cats bite females there when mating, so maybe it has something to do with it.
Of course, your cat could be injured too.
Some cats dont like to be petted in certain areas. Mine does the same thing, only likes her head petted. If your cat seems fine otherwise, then I wouldnt worry. Just dont pet it there.
Lots of blanks in the info that could help with this answer, like how old is your cat? Is this a new behavior, or a long standing behavior? If it just started, has he had a recent injury, or surgery that could be related to it? Is he older, and if this is a new-ish behavior, could he be developing arthritis in his spine that is bothered by being touched?
Otherwise, some cats just don’t like being touched on their backs and tails, or they can only tolerate a small amount of being touched or petted there, or other places.
So there are lots of reasons–do any of these ideas fit with what you know about your own cat?
